After qualifying as a Dental Surgeon at King’s College in London, I spent 30 years working in the Health Service. Initially in Maxillo-facial Surgery, then in General Practice in Plympton and Ivybridge, and for the last 10 years as a Regional Dental Officer for the SW of England, with a part-time teaching appointment at Bristol University. I then left the NHS and joined a National Telecommunications Company, where I was responsible for the Health & Wellbeing of all the UK based employees.
During my time in the last role I quickly became aware of how prevalent mental health issues were, particularly stress, anxiety and depression; being the greatest causes of sickness absence by some considerable margin. I worked with various health providers and organisations on initiatives to improve support for these conditions in our workplaces, receiving a national award for ‘The Best Mental Health Resilience Strategy in the Workplace.’
I became aware of how successful Solution Focused Psychotherapy using Clinical Hypnotherapy was in resolving many and varied problems, and as a useful additional support for those with entrenched mental health problems receiving conventional medical treatment. This lead me to decide to train to deliver such therapies, utilising my extensive clinical experience.
I qualified with a Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) after studying with the Clifton Practice, which is considered the gold standard in modern therapeutic techniques and the foremost training establishment in the UK. I am registered as a Hypnotherapist with the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) which is the official regulatory body for complimentary therapists, and I am a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH), the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and registered as a Psychotherapist by the National Board for Modern Psychotherapy (NBfMP). Members of these organisations must adhere to strict ethical codes and structures. I am fully insured and hold an enhanced DBS certificate (previously known as a CRB certificate).
I offer potential clients an Initial Consultation and Relaxation CD free of charge, generally in my treatment facility in Oreston, Plymouth, but can arrange home visits if necessary.
